"A PROBIOTIC DESIGNED TO MOVE BEYOND THE TYPICAL DIGESTIVE BENEFITS. DESIGNED IN SUCH AS WAY AS TO HARNESS THE MANY POWERS AND BENEFITS SAFE BACTERIA CAN PROVIDE TO THE HUMAN BODY."
SAFETY
Probiotics in a wide variety of fermented foods have been consumed for centuries around the globe across a broad spectrum of cultures. They have not been considered, either today or in the past, to be harmful. In the last 20 years that probiotics have been increasingly consumed in the developed world, infections with Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria (the main two groups of probiotic organisms) have been rare and have not been shown to increase. These rare occurrences of infection have usually been in immune-compromised individuals.
The GudGut formula purposefully excludes any probiotic organisms that have ever been reported in the medical literature to cause any type of infection, even in immune-compromised individuals. Our company does not recommend the use of our probiotic in immune-compromised, pregnant, or nursing individuals, or in children under the age of sixteen years.
AIDING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Probiotics and the “effector molecules” they produce can have multiple beneficial effects on the immune system and the ability of the gastrointestinal tract to defend itself against bacteria that cause disease. The barrier function provided by the lining of the intestinal tract is an important aspect of the immune system, designed to keep out disease-causing bacteria and the toxic chemicals they produce. Amazingly, probiotics have been shown to enhance this barrier function in a number of research studies. Furthermore, probiotics have been shown to actually strengthen the function of immune cells and the protective products they produce, such as the antibodies IgA and IgG. In other studies, probiotics have demonstrated an enhancement of immunity in elderly individuals by stimulating the production of beneficial CD4+ and CD25+ lymphocytes, as well as tumor-killing natural killer cells. Probiotics have also been shown to stimulate “phagocytes”, immune cells designed to attack, consume and destroy both tumor cells and disease causing microbes.
INFLAMMATION – THE FRIEND OF DISEASE AND THE ENEMY OF HEALTH
For the last twenty years, modern medical research has pointed to inflammation as perhaps the single most important factor in the development and maintenance of many disease states, including many types of tumors, arthritis, dementia, heart disease and other diseases common to aging. It is thought that a chronic and low-level inflammatory state, associated with dysfunction of the immune system so common to the elderly population, has a lot to do with the diseases of aging.
Many of the signals which initiate and boost inflammation originate in the human gut and can be reduced with probiotics. Medical research has already confirmed the ability of probiotics to produce anti-inflammatory substances such as IL-10, and to improve many aspects of gastrointestinal health in elderly individuals, resulting in decreased inflammation. While much is made of the ability of certain fatty acids (fish oils) and antioxidant vitamins (vitamins C and E), to reduce inflammation, it is now clear that probiotics also have powerful anti-inflammatory effects in humans, especially in the elderly. In certain cultures, specifically around the Mediterranean and throughout east-asia, the regular use of probiotic-based fermented foods is thought to help explain the remarkable longevity associated with those populations.
